In this journal we’ll see Grandpa gearing up for he and Grandma’s trip -

During this year Grandpa did work for:

Murdock, Dunkley, Mrs. Fisher,  L.T. Dee, O.C. Hammond, George Eccles, Willard Eccles, S.S. Eccles, Mrs. Royal Eccles, Mrs. Cleone Eccles, Mrs. S.S. Eccles.

Here's some business cards and info he had in the front of this journal:

Here are the entries that stood out to me:

Jan. 11th (Sat) 1964: Grandpa has an entry that says "Broke Cable sent to Glen". and then has a note about a 1949 Chrystler Windsor that says the following:

Can anyone shed light on this subject?

Here's a picture of a 1949 Chrystler Windsor:

Feb. 21st (Fri) 1964: Grandpa took his truck in for the “3000 mi check”.

Was this the infamous truck that Dad, Gwen & Marvin got in trouble for painting?

Grandpa also has a second note on this day that says “cholera shot”.

Feb. 24th (Mon) 1964: “Diptheria – Tetanus shot”.

Feb. 25th (Tue) 1964: Grandpa went to see a lawyer about his will and went to get pictures taken for his passport.

Feb. 26th (Wed) 1964: There’s an entry that says “K. Wiggins – Bath Rm. Wall covering (critt)” (sp?)

Mar. 4th (Wed) 1964: Grandpa primed a donkey for “Lavell Johnson”.

Mar. 6th (Fri) 1964: “3rd shot Typhoid”.

Mar. 9th (Mon) 1964: The entries of “Murdock Travel” and “Merrill, Lynch” jumped out at me.

Mar. 10th (Tue) 1964: “Passport”.

Mar. 12th (Thur) 1964: Pick up Gwens stock – Goodbody” & "Keiths Walltex-Vinyl-".

Mar. 14th (Sat) 1964: “Passports arrived”.

Mar. 19th (Thur) 1964: There’s a note in the upper right hand corner that says “Gene (sp?) Hospital”.

Mar. 21st (Sat) 1964: “Cholera Shot”.

Mar. 24th (Tue) 1964: “Shot Diptheria – Tettanes”

April 18th (Sat) 1964: “Round the world Tour”.

July 20th (Mon) 1964: “Returned OK. Round the world Tour”.

I have Grandma’s journal she kept during their trip, as well as all the slides, many postcards and other photographs. We will be taking that trip once we are done with Grandpa’s journals. STAY TUNED!

July 22nd (Wed) 1964: Grandpa left Ogden at 10:00pm with Larry, bound for Los Angeles to pick up Gwen’s furniture.

July 25th (Sat) 1964: Grandpa returned from Los Angeles at 10:00am with Gwen’s furniture.

Aug. 14th (Fri) 1964: “Keith W. (Wiggins) 1 ½ 3 gal. Sealer. 3 qts Walnut Stain”.

Aug. 18th (Tue) 1964: After meeting with Clark Leaming Grandpa took his truck into Browning Chevrolet at 8:00am. His mileage was 4032 miles and they pulled the motor and fixed his pistons and rings.

Sept. 1st (Tue) 1964: Grandpa went to Dr. Southwick and was “A-OK”.

Sept. 18th (Fri) 1964: “Rain”.

Sept. 22nd (Tue) 1964: Grandpa went to Santa Fe.

Here’s a picture of Cerrillos Road in Santa Fe in 1964:

Oct. 1st (Thur) 1964: “Gwens Baby. Kevin D-113”.

Oct. 28th (Wed) 1964 to Nov. 13th 1964: Over this time period Grandpa worked a total of 23 hours helping Keith Wiggins paint his bathroom and prime his porch.

Nov. 6th (Fri) 1964: Grandpa went to Salt Lake.

Here's a picture of what Salt Lake looked like in the 1960's:

Nov. 7th (Sat) 1964: Grandpa went to Snow Basin.

Here's a picture of some skiers at Snow Basin in the 1960's:

Clifford William Johnson Year Book Journal 1962

Grandpa had a few jokes and sayings written on some loose papers in the front of the journal:

The difference
between a hero and
a coward is that
the coward thinks faster.

Remember –

Opportunities are
never lost
someone else takes
the ones you miss.

I don’t feel so well
have a temp of 103
when I get to 105
I’m going to sell

Trip to Hawaii
Took my wife
We alway take
Along things
We don’t need

The "ADP General Purpose Card" on the back side of this next paper has a date of July 1967.

We alway have
Too much month
Left at the end
Of our money.

The salary we use
To dream of we can’t
Live on today

Now a day when some-
Body pays cash you get
Suspicious. You figure
His credit is no good

Joe E. Lewis, said
I’ve been rich.
I’ve been poor.
I’de rather be rich,
So be sure you save your money.
You never know when
It may be valuable

Some people spend money
They don’t have to buy
Things they don’t need
To impress people they
Don’t like anyway.

This journal gave me some trouble, but I finally figured out Grandpa's pattern for recording his 1962 entries and his 1984 entries, so hopefully the entries I put forward here will be accurate.

Grandpa's clients from this year included:

Carlos F. Martindell, Ralph Gray, Joe Stevens, Spurlock, Dr. Clark Rich, Mrs. C. Rich, Wolfers, Dunkley, Mrs. Peery, Royal Eccles, Chambers, Ogden Stake Offices, Coit, G. Singleton, Isao Yamaguch, Norma Haney, Southwick, Jane Brewer, R. Pugmire, Glen Quillman, Steve Denkers, Ruando Spa, J. Silver.

Jan. 29th (Mon) 1962: Grandpa did work for W. Eccles, Willard Eccles and S.S. Eccles all in the same day.

Mar. 21st (Wed) 1962: Grandpa has a note in here that says:

“Willard Eccles     Wash L.R Cornich (sp?) – Cancelled (Dr Rich Died).”

It would be interesting to find an obituary for Dr. Rich.

Apr. 11th (Wed) 1962 to Apr. 14th (Sat) 1962: Grandpa took a trip to Reno.

Here’s a postcard picture that was taken just a year later that gives you an idea of what it would’ve looked like to Grandpa.

May 16th (Wed) 1962: This entry says the following:

“Loaded Gwen & Larry”

Can any Breitweisers shed light on the subject?

June 15th (Fri) 1962: Grandpa had a Board Meeting in Grand Junction.

Here’s a picture of what Grand Junction looked like during the early 1960’s:

Aug. 6th (Unknown Day) 1963: <----Notice the date: Grandpa worked on George Eccles’ Canyon property. This entry is interesting because Grandpa dated it 1963 and also because of what it says:

11:00AM George Eccles – Canyon,
Started to work – Prepare
Party took over! Decided to quit.
4 hrs. X Exterior Prepare

Aug. 31st (Fri) 1962: Grandpa worked for C. Rich on his “Ex. Porch”, but it was raining so he quit after 2 ½ hours.

Sept. 6th (Thur) 1962: It rained all day, but Grandpa still worked 4 hours at the Ogden Stake Offices mixing colors and painting the hall. Plus he worked 4 hours for Coit.

Sept. 7th (Fri) 1962: Grandpa’s notes say it was a “Good day” because the “Rain stoped.”

Sept. 13th (Thur) 1962: Grandpa wrote “rain” and then slashed it out and described the day as “Beauty Day”.

Sept. 20th (Thurs) to Sept. 22nd (Sat) 1962: Grandpa went to Idaho Falls.

On Thurs he wrote “Raind out at noon” and on Fri he wrote “Rained all nite”.

Sept. 24th (Mon) 1962: I thought this next entry was interesting:

67 Milbon (sp?) $ asked for
Prison remodeling

Sept. 28th (Fri) 1962: Grandpa has an entry that mentions a Isao Yamaguch @ 451 15th St. Ogden Utah.

Here’s a modern day view of the house:

Oct. 19th (Fri) to Oct 21st (Sun) 1962: Grandpa went deer hunting.

This next entry is for John Wiggins who wrote this in an email to me on 04/15/10:

When I was a teenager, my father wanted something to keep me busy one summer, so he had Clifford explain to him how to oil and graphite the wood shingles on a roof, and then he taught me.

I spent much of the summer doing Delores’ roof and our roof (what a messy job!). When I was doing Delores’ roof, Clifford would come over and see that I was following directions and doing a good job. It always made me feel really good when he would give me his “mark of approval”.

Oct. 22nd (Mon) 1962 to Nov 1st (Thur) 1962: Grandpa did a “Roof scrape” for J. Stevens and worked a total of 46.5 hours.

On Oct. 25th (Thur) 1962 during that week he wrote the following entry:

2-5s Raw oil c 1.93                            19.30
1-5 Metalic c 2.50                             12.50
2-44 8 gals Mixed Bennetts Graphite     19.52
1-25 lb Graphite @ 17 (cents) 14         3.85
1-5 gal Kerosene 45                           2.25
20- Flashings c 11 (cents)                  2.20

Nov. 26th (Mon) 1962: Grandpa went to Dr. Southwick for a physical and a chest x-ray.

Dec. 3rd (Mon) 1962: Grandpa went back to Dr. Southwick for more x-rays.

Dec. 4th (Tue) 1962: Grandpa had x-rays on his “stomack”.

Dec. 5th (Wed) 1962: Grandpa had an appointment with Dr. Southwick at 11:30 A.M.

Dec. 10th (Mon) 1962: Grandpa was scheduled for x-rays at 8:45 A.M. but it was cancelled till Tuesday at 8:45.

Dec. 11th (Tue) 1962: Grandpa had his x-rays.

Dec. 19th (Wed) 1962: Grandpa had an appointment with Dr. Southwick again at 11:30 A.M.

I wonder what was wrong that he needed so many doctor visits and x-rays.

This next entry is interesting:

S.S. Eccles.
4 x 6 ¾ Not A Doorbell
Brite Aqua green – 17-A-31 – Front Door
NESASTRA – don’t mention it.

Can anyone decipher that last part?

Grandpa had 2 addresses in the back of the book. The first is for:

Everett Wilson
3439 Adams.

Here’s a modern day picture of the house:

The second address is for Aunt Gwen:

12821 – Dening (Deming) Ave.
Downey Calif. 861-4126 / 213

Here’s a modern day look up Deming Ave and if the house numbers are still correct then Gwen’s house would’ve been on the left hand side where there’s a strip mall now:

It’s unclear if this address was a 1962 entry or a 1984 entry. Can any Breitweisers shed light on the subject?

Clifford William Johnson Year Book Journal 1962 (To Be Continued...)

This journal is an absolute mess, so I'll have to work on finishing the post next week.

Grandpa's last journal in the stack is 1983, but a little ways into this 1962 journal I realized he also used it as his 1984 journal. Grandpa didn't date all of his 1984 entries as 1984, so I have to go back through and try to figure out which are 1984 and which are 1962.

I think I have a handle on most of which entries go with which year, but only time will tell. I'll do my best.

It's time for dinner and our weekly Sunday trip to the inlaws, so I'll have to work on it more next week.

Stay tuned!

July 4th, 2010: William Reed Johnson Baby Blessing

Hi Family,

We had a family get-together that lasted the rest of the day last week, but we're back to business this afternoon with Grandpa's 1962 journal...coming soon!
