Grandpa taped the following items in the front of this journal:

Also the following members of the Eccles Family, which this year included Royal Eccles and George Eccles:

Willard Eccles, Mrs. Joe Eccles, Royal Eccles, S.S. Eccles, George Eccles

Mar. 15th (Wed) 1961 to Mar 24th (Fri) 1961: Grandpa worked 40 hours for a “Norm Bingham”.








The reason why this stands out is because we Johnsons’ are related to every Bingham on the planet in one way or another.

Since Mom is a Bingham (and our family’s resident historian) I placed a call to her and here's what she said:

"Norman Bonneru Bingham is the Bingham in "Buehler & Bingham Clothing Store", which used to be on Washington Blvd. somewhere north of the Egyptian Theater. It was a very high, top notch clothing store.

Grandpa did work for them at their store and their house. Buehler’s house was blue and Bingham’s house was pink. Dad helped Grandpa paint the Bingham house and he hated it because he didn't like the pink. 

As a side note: A poor couple left their baby on Norm Bingham’s porch because they had money. Norm Bingham’s wife Melba Irene Bramwell Bingham heard the baby crying and went out to get it. Instead of taking care of the baby she turned it over to the police who eventually tracked down the young parents."

Mom explained how we’re related, and there’s actually two angles to the relation, the other being through Bonneru, but it’s too complicated to relate here, so suffice it to say we are related.

Grandpa did a lot more work for Norm Bingham later on in the year.

I loved this next entry:

Apr. 15th (Sat) 1961: Dr Dean Flanders 6 (hours). Prepare & hang wallpaper (Grasscloth) private office 10 S.R. @

The reason why I loved this entry is because Dr. Flanders was my doctor all through elementary school.

Whenever I got strep throat, bronchitis or tonsillitis Mom always took me to Dr. Flanders to get penicillin shot in my rear end.

I hated getting shots and Dr. Flanders used to give them to me and say, “Do you want me to pull the needle out now?” and I’d say, “YES!” and he’d say, “I already pulled it out a long time ago!”

Dr. Flanders used to also give me “pig” pennies, which looked similar to real pennies. Mom would keep them in her purse.

Swirled away in the Family History I inherited is the following funeral program for Dr. Flanders:

He was a very nice man. I remember Dr. Flanders passed away about a year after he retired. Mom said Dr. Flanders’s wife Arlene was related to Grandma (Lavell) Johnson through Dr. Conrad Jensen somehow.

Apr. 18th (Tues) 1961: This next entry caught my eye because Grandpa wrote Aunt Gwen’s name, but I can’t decipher what the measurement code and initials next to it mean:











Aug 2nd (Wed) 1961 to Aug 3rd (Thurs) 1961: Grandpa went to “Scott’s wedding”. I don’t know who they are.

Aug 7th (Mon) 1961: Grandpa did work for the patriarch of the Eccles’ Family, George Eccles:

I used to work at the Davis Golf Course with an older gentleman named Pierre that used to do lots of golfing with George Eccles.

Oct. 12th (Thurs) 1961 to Dec. 5th (Tues) 1961: Grandpa worked a total of 186 hours for George Eccles.

Mom said Grandpa did great work and that’s why the Eccles’ Family kept using him and his work was so quality that he got referred around to a bunch of different high-end businesses.

Not much stands out in this journal. Much of the pages are empty and the ones that have recordings show many familiar names mixed in with some new ones:

Mar. 19th (Mon) 1960: Grandpa had an appointment with Willard Eccles.

Mar. 23rd (Wed) 1960 to July 1st (Fri): Grandpa worked well over 136 hours for Willard Eccles doing a variety of jobs including:

Cleaning the living room, Barbara’s and Susan’s rooms, guest room, dressing room, kitchen, east closet and the library, washing metal on the porch, removing wallpaper in the kitchen, checking and ordering P room paper, taping door covering DR fixture, priming new windows, applying basecote to the stair hall, preparing & enameling the powder room, spackling, painting the basement, sealing walls, installing broom holders and hooks, installing switch plates, registers, switch box covers, repairing and hanging mirror, towel holders, soap dish and shelf, touching up the kitchen cabinet and kitchen panel edges, etc.

Jun 11th (Fri) 1959: Grandpa went to Grand Junction.

I did a search on the internet for photos of Grand Junction in 1959 and found these two photographs from July 4th, 1959 that show the picnic grounds directly across the street from the Gin on Highway 57. These photos give you a small idea of what things would've looked like when Grandpa went there.











Sept 24th (Thur) 1959: I found this journal entry interesting because so far Grandpa hasn't recorded any addresses in his journals that I've noticed, but on this day Grandpa did a job for a Mrs. Bott at 3046 Polk in Ogden. The job is described as: Estimate Gross Cloth Bed Rm 4 walls to Door Tops.

I did a seach for the address and here's what the house looks like present day:

















Oct 16th (Fri) 1959 to Oct 18th (Sun) 1959: Grandpa went deer hunting.

Dad would've been 18 on this hunt. I remember Dad mentioning he went deer hunting with Grandpa on occasion, but he never really cared for the actual hunt. He preferred the camping part of the trips much more.

As a side note, when I was a teenager and Grandpa passed away I inherited his only deer antler trophy:

Grandpa shot this deer in 1946 and I have the deer tag swirled away somewhere in all the Family History. When I find it I'll see if it has an exact date for the shooting and I'll cross reference it with his 1946 journal. It'd be interesting to see what his exact notes for that day were, if it's even recorded. I'll do a special post with that info when I find the tag.

I want to have these antlers mounted on a nice plaque with the tag and a picture of grandpa with his gun that I have. I've adopted Dad's attitude about hunting, so this will probably be the only hunting trophy I'll ever have.

Nov 23rd (Mon) 1959: Grandpa did some work for the Weber College Institute of Religion.

Clifford William Johnson Dailyaide Journal 1958

When we look at many of the jobs Grandpa (Cliff) did this year we see many of the same familiar names, but there a still a few new ones.

S.S Eccles, Coit, Wolfer’s Store, Clark Rich, Willard Eccles, Sonnys Bed, Fletcher Scoveroft, Lowell Ridges, Dr. Howe, Bill Hall, R. Pugmire, Mrs. Joe Eccles, Stone, J.(A. or H.) Hogle, W. Ward, Ruando Spa, Peery, Davis, Quilnian(?).

We still see a member of the Hogle family, but I couldn't make out if the initial was "A" or "H".

Jan 6th (Mon) 1958 to May 19 (Mon) 1958: Grandpa did a massive job for S.S. Eccles at their home that took well over 402 hours doing all kinds of work including:

Repainting mouldings including ceiling mouldings in the kitchen, touching up kitchen holes, kitchen dividers, new drawer west bottom kitchen, kitchen rods, dressing room rods, bathroom rods, bathroom ventilation, cutting legs off, one bathroom chrome register, preparing and lacquering the bathroom stool, guest bath, cleaning the master bedroom and guest bedroom, registers in the boys’ rooms, Marsh Eccles’ furniture including chair legs, table and curtain rod, Sonny Eccles’ shelves and bed, gardener’s room, changing bar drawers, bar wall, welding and painting wall brackets, lacquering the shoe case, typewriter cabinet, revolving top chair, enameling paper holder or scotch dispenser, clock, waste paper basket, peg board, hooks, Hi Fi speakers and screen.

Grandpa also did more work for Willard Eccles and Mrs. Joe Eccles.

Jan 17th (Fri) 1958: Went to the P.D.C.A. Inaugural Ball in Salt Lake.

Feb 17th (Mon) 1958: Grandpa got a traffic ticket while in California. Most of the writing is difficult to read and decipher.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but according to the yellow paper it looks like Grandpa might have been going 20mph in a 35mph zone. It could be the opposite, but I remember Grandpa was notorious for driving slow.

I wonder what he was doing in California on this day.

May 19th (Mon) 1958: Most people remember Grandpa as a man of few words. Perhaps the entry at the bottom of the page this day explains part of the reason:

"The Reason talk is cheap, is the supply exceeds the demand."

June 13th (Fri) 1958: Went to Grand Junction.

I thought this next entry was interesting:

July 1st (Tues) & July 3rd (Thurs) 1958: Worked for W. Eccles priming a cable car fence.

July 9th (Wed) 1958: Went to a funeral in Idaho.

I wonder whose funeral it was and what part of Idaho they went to. Were they family? It would be interesting to see that person's headstone.

This next entry made me happy when I saw it because it’s the first time Dad’s (Glen’s) name is mentioned. Dad would’ve been 17 years old.

Aug 29th (Fri) 1958: Fister Roof. Grandpa worked 7 hours and Dad worked 9.

Hello Family,

I apologize this will be the only post for today. I'm taking a special trip out to the cemetary in Spanish Fork with my in-laws to see the graves for their family members. Then we're celebrating a birthday party when we get back.
